New Year / Old Cliche

New year, new me. I wish it were that easy. Three months of physical therapy on the knee since my last post, and I'm still struggling. Is it better? Yes. Is it well? No.

Today I took the step of joining a gym. I cannot run every day. I think I can handle two days in a row but then need to cross training on the third day. When it is too cold, I just cannot handle the bike. That leaves the gym.

It also opens up the opportunity for weight training again. I had been pushing that hard a few years ago and felt great. Lately it has been limited to what has been prescribed for my knee. The doctor at my last physical suggest I pick it back up again. So it took a while.

Today at the gym was just cardio. An hour on the elliptical trainer did the deed of getting the heart rate up and burning the calories. The knee wasn't comfortable, but I have run the last two days. It never really hurt.

Tomorrow it is back to the gym for some lifting. It may be more cardio as well if it is as cold as expected.

Tom,

Hopefully you'll be able to work on getting your legs stronger and maybe that will help keep your knee healthier in the future. You're too young to lose your running to knee problems.

I think all the weight work I've done in the years since my ACL replacement has made a big difference in how healthy my knee is. Yesterday, I could really feel how the strength in my legs was helping tremendously in skiing tough terrain - icy moguls covered by fresh snow.

Get healthy dude.
